Barcelona's Eixample district is the result of the visionary urban planning of Ildefons Cerdà, who devoted nearly two decades to designing the city's expansion after the demolition of the old medieval walls in the 19th century. His goal was to create a healthier, more modern and future-ready Barcelona, with wide streets, well-ventilated city blocks, green spaces and a road network designed to improve mobility.
The Cerdà Plan represented a true urban planning revolution. It prioritised natural light, ventilation, residents' quality of life and a rational distribution of public services, anticipating the needs of a city undergoing rapid industrial transformation. His vision was so forward-thinking that it even foresaw a significant increase in traffic and future means of transport.
More than 160 years later, Eixample remains one of the world's most admired examples of urban planning.
